30 Film Females: The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Filed under: 30 Film Females — ootastic @ 3:58 pm

Back in the early nineties when I was an impressionable teenager, The Silence of the Lambs was a big deal (and arguably still is).  It won the Big Five Academy Awards and has been endlessly referenced and spoofed ever since (my favourite being French & Saunders).  You don’t need me to tell you about the grandstanding Anthony Hopkins and his f-f-fava beans, against which Jodie Foster as FBI trainee Clarice Starling more than holds her own.  This is my kind of horror film – more mind over (grey) matter – where the gore is mostly imagined rather than imaged (like the later Se7en).  The house switcheroo near the end followed by the pitch-black/night-vision basement cat-and-mouse still gives me the heebie jeebies.

Rather than my paltry offerings, the first picture I thought of using in this post is shown below.  A couple of my friends have these reticent sheep on a T-shirt (I’ve requested photos), but this version has been borrowed off the internet.

Honourable mentions for other great female characters in 1991: the pumped-up yet vulnerable Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor in sci-fi action classic (and best-sequel contender) Terminator 2: Judgement Day.  Also, Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis as the eponymous Thelma & Louise in Ridley Scott’s on-the-run road-trip.
