30 Film Females: Vera Drake (2004)

Filed under: 30 Film Females — ootastic @ 10:11 am

I recently re-watched the Pixar film The Incredibles with my son and realised that superhero status could be applied to another quite different female film character. Hidden identity? Legally dubious activities? In this case I’m referring to Vera Drake, as depicted by Imelda Staunton in the eponymous 1950’s drama, who might possibly be sporting a giant ‘V’ underneath that flowery apron!  I adapted this logo from a version a drew some years ago around superhero sweetmeats.  Given the sensitivity of the abortionist plot of this film, I’ve removed the unfortunate dripping effect – this was originally intended to be melted ice cream pertaining to that 80s multi-layered frozen dessert, although in Vera’s case it it could be tea-related: “Right then dear, first thing we’ve got to do is put the kettle on”.  I meant to revisit the subject after enjoying a Half Man Half Biscuit gig, but my work-in-progress of a giant mutant Oreo woman was misplaced in my latest house move.  Instead I can offer you suggestions such as Golden Wonder Woman, Blackjack Widow, Battenburg Girl, and Mary Poppets.

Honourable mentions for 2004: winsome if whining multi-hair-coloured Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Whatsit…er, I mean Mind.  Also, buffed up Hilary Swank as mo cuishle in boxing tearjerker (two words you don’t often see together) Million Dollar Baby.

I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Mutant Replicant

Filed under: films, SciFi — ootastic @ 4:45 pm

I am the very model of a modern mutant replicant;
I’ve come to Earth to flout the law and generally be deviant.
I spend my days avoiding being put into retirement;
I may be a machine but I am actually quite sentient;

My kind is engineered with this new-fangled gene technology.
A Voight-Kampf test identifies our complete lack of empathy.
We’re usually banished to some obscure off-world colony.
People call us skin-jobs but we find that quite derogatory.

I’m specially trained for combat, also homicide political,
Plus covert ops, and menial jobs for military personnel;
A fully-equipped self-sufficient battle-ready stealth model.
In summary, I am nothing like a modern major-general.
