The Biopsy

If the sanitary products were substituted for plasters, this would be a direct follow-up to The Check-Up and The Scan (which found a thyroid nodule).  Instead, this comic follows an abnormal smear test and colposcopy and I tried experimenting with grids.

Ode to Joy

Filed under: cancer — ootastic @ 12:14 pm

This new cartoon is about my mum’s brain tumour after I was inspired by the recent BBC biopic The C Word about Lisa Lynch‘s breast cancer.  I tried to be near-silent and use natural frames rather than comic panels, an idea sparked by the Perspectives episode on War Art presented by Eddie Redmayne.  After a lot of thinking time, the actual drawing was finished in about a week while being energised by reading tweets from the 2015 Comics and Medicine Conference.  Apologies for the quality of the image, but my usual scanning process somehow didn’t work – I’ll try again when I get a chance.  Thanks to the Walton Centre, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Marie Curie and Cancer Research UK for support and advice.
